Festa del Redentore
16-Juli-05 :: starting 3rd Sat of july every year
VENEZIA (VE) centre
One of the greatest and most famous festivals in Venice. The festival once was born in 1576 when Venice was struck and released by a devastating pest epedemy. The senate swore to organize this very festival on the venecian island of Giudecca to honour Jesus Christ.
The festival has been very popular ever since. Hundreds of decorated boats and gondolas come together at saturday evening at the Canale della Giudecca and in front of San Marco. Beside the channels and by the beautifully illuminated Canal Grande a hughe crowd is awaiting the fireworks throwing flares of lights into the sea.
After that the boats and gondolas ship to the Lido of Venice, with music and chants, to await the sunset...
Hints
For visitors from Jesolo the best way to arrive in Venice is taking a ship from Punta Sabbioni.
Please know that ship-traffic is being suspended for several hours because of safety reasons (fireworks) as well because of the fact of heavy traffic - there are hundreds of ships and boats anchoring in front of San Marco.
Of course, after the festa, the transportation will continue to get you back again to the Lido of Venice or Punta Sabbioni. (find the station San Zacharia).
