Castle of Duino

The park of the castle of Duino (which btw. was highly estimated by the poet Rainer Maria Rilke) is truely an overwhelming sea of flowers (if you are there in the right season, of course). It has several floors an cascades where you can have a very good time walking around and admiring the richness of flowers of this particular spot.

It is indeed different from the "common" mediterranean vegetation. Thanks to Prince Raimond of Thurn und Taxis who restored this estate after the war.
The park as we can admire it today has been created by the Princess Mary of Thurn und Taxis in the middle of the 19th century; later it has been reordered by the latter mentioned grandchild and finally redesigned in 1988 and 2003.

The cypresses as well as the other trees protect the castle from the Bora which is quite a strong wind coming from north (and which can speed up to 120 km/h).

The castle of Duino is a must see as well as the castle of Miramare which is located neadby.
