Arriving for the first time at Marostica is a spectacle: The panorama is so unique! The nucleus of the ancient city, surrounded by solid walls of stone, embraces a close hill which gives it a highly unique profile.
In mideaval times this region was famous for its elegant parties. But unfortunately not for too long, because they were challenged by the city of Padova. Well, war is the reason for many things - that's why the cities in between, Citadella and Castelfranco, were rather fortresses. There still is a lot left of it.
Living Chess

Old rivalry in modern times: every two years the people of Marostica play "living chess". The board consists of 1 squaremeter marble tiles. The players / figures wear costumes of 15th century fashion. If you happen to be in this region at this happening, don't miss it!
The roots of this events lie in the past: In 1500 the two young princes decided to rather think than fight. All this was because of the beautiful daugther Leonora of Taddeo Parisio. The story's end was: The winner too the girl, the looser it's sister.
In any case the ancient city of Marostica is definitely a lovely place which is not crowded (except when they play chess).
