St. Marcus square - Piazza San Marco

In the year 1000 the Piazza San Marco, the square of Saint Marcus wasn't a place but a garden for fruits and vegetables. In 12th century it got its hence dimensions.

It was sourrounded by buildings and palaces, the terrain was paved. So they created the Piazetta, a shore of marble with 2 enormous columns of granite (where they lated placed the winged venecian lion and St. Marcus upon) giving a impressing welcome to its visitors that were arriving by boat.

Btw. the two columns were the preferred place for public executions.

Piazza San Marco you will never feel lonesome there...

Traditional "nightlife" by the Saint Marcus Square
