Cesenatico Maritime

Museum

The Floating Museum

The canal harbor in Cesenatico is truly one of a kind in the northern Adriatic!

With great love and patience, the traditional boat types of the Adriatic Sea have been sought out, collected, restored, and put on display here. This Maritime Museum bears witness to the dedication of those involved in preserving these "old artifacts" as unique reminders of times gone by.

For centuries, the canal harbor of Cesenatico offered fishermen and sailors shelter and hospitality. Out of a love for the sea, the idea emerged around 1986 not only to preserve old boat types but also to make them accessible to visitors.
Eight different types of vessels with colorful sails are moored in the oldest part of the Leonardo Harbor between the two bridges on Via Mazzini and Via Cecchini.

The boats, which were used for transport and fishing, were equipped like comfortable homes and were primarily used in the Adriatic Sea until the advent of motorization.

Why were the sails painted in such bright colors?

First, to be visible from a distance (which is why, for example, houses in fishing villages like Burano were painted in bright colors to help with navigation); second, to protect against mold; and finally, and most importantly, to catch the eye and for the sheer joy of creativity.
As you let your eyes wander over this unique Italian harbor museum, you will quickly sense the harmony between the Adriatic coastal dwellers and their sea, their ships, and their colors.
