An eventful history

The seaside resort of Gatteo a Mare is part of the municipality of Gatteo, which was founded in the Middle Ages and has a turbulent history. It passed from the Holy See to Cesare Borgia, then to the Venetians, back to the Vatican, then to Napoleon, and finally, in 1859, to the Kingdom of Italy.

As evidence of the town's long history, works of great artistic value have been preserved in Gatteo, such as the Church ofSan Rocco with its frescoes (1484), the ancient castle ruins, beautiful tapestries from the Bolognese school dating from the 17th century, and a marble baptismal font from 1609, which can be viewed in the parish church of San Lorenzo.
