Since ancient times (and likely even before that), the Bay of Cres has been a popular settlement site. This is because it lies well sheltered in the lee of the high plateau, making the island’s capital, Cres, a safe harbor.
In its old town, built of stone, you can almost see how the town has evolved around the harbor over the centuries.

As in so many places along the eastern Adriatic coast, architectural details catch the eye, serving as a reminder of Venice’s nearly three-hundred-year rule - such as the pyramid-shaped roof of the campanile in Lubenice, the bocce court there, or the blue face of the clock tower in Cres (which you’ll find in a very similar style on the Orologio dei Mori in Venice or in Padova).

One of Cres’s biggest attractions is its numerous bays and pristine beaches. Some of them are accessible on foot (be sure to bring water and snacks), while others can only be reached by boat. On Cres, it’s therefore a good idea to rent a boat or take a boat tour with one of the many operators who ferry swimmers to the beaches.
