A Fairytale Castle with a Sea View

At first glance, Miramare Castle near Trieste looks as fairytale – like as Italy's answer to Neuschwanstein Castle. But that's far from the truth - it was built by a Habsburg.

Its almost magical aura and idyllic location right on the Adriatic Sea are beyond question.

Miramare Castle was the royal residence of Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian (as we recall, his brother Franz Joseph I was the one who elevated Grado to the status of a spa town). It was completed in 1860. (It was built according to a design by C. Junker.)

Inside, Miramare Castle has preserved the magic of the past. The magnificent furniture, the paintings – indeed, the entire spellbinding atmosphere – immediately transport visitors back to Sissi's time...

Castle	Open year-round, 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. (ticket office closes at 6:30 p.m.)
Castle Park	8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. November through February 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. March and October 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. April through September
Prices	€6; reduced: €4; free for EU citizens aged 18–25; seniors (65 and older); Youth under 18; children under 12 accompanied by an adult

Admittedly, the idea is tempting: jumping into the Adriatic Sea from the balcony of Miramare Castle... It costs 1,000 euros, as a young Austrian has now discovered through official channels.
