The tram departs from the northern part of Trieste's city center and climbs 340 meters over its 5.1-kilometer route. What makes it unique is that it climbs a 26% gradient (with the help of a funicular) along the 799-meter section between Piazza Scorcola and Vetta Scorcola. The tram runs every 20 minutes.
Closed for renovation
Following an accident, the tram underwent renovations and is scheduled to reopen in the fall of 2020, 2024, or 2026. It is expected to be ready by June 2026.
By the way, from up here you can see the Savudrija lighthouse near Umag across Slowenia. This was a useful feature that people knew how to use strategically (since it allowed them to learn of the arrival of new ships even earlier).

Bicycles allowed
The streetcars that allow bicycles on board are marked with a special sign. This applies on Saturdays and Sundays and at specific times of the day (9:11, 10:11, and 11:11 a.m.). There is space for 6 bicycles + 3 additional spots.
Loading and unloading bicycles (only 1 bicycle per person, no tandems) is only permitted at the route's endpoints, i.e., in Trieste or Opicina.
