After a long and eventful history (Umag was even under French rule for a time), Umag is now a lively seaside resort with a 45-kilometer coastline.

If there’s one thing Umag has plenty of (besides beach pebbles), it’s tennis courts, since Umag is the venue for the Croatie Open. Tennis fans will find plenty to enjoy in Umag.

Aside from that, Umag is the very first town on your right when you enter Istria from the north. With crystal-clear water - for which the Adriatic is so famous - it invites you to swim from May through October. Among other spots, the beach at Plaza Sol, which has been awarded the Blue Flag, is highly recommended.

The town doesn’t have too many historical sights, but it offers peaceful and affordable seaside vacations. The town also features many green spaces where you can escape the summer heat.

Located in the so-called "Bishop's Tower" (dating from the 14th century) at the tip of the peninsula, the building was originally used for defense. Today, it is considered the oldest surviving building in Umag.

The museum opened in 1976 and now houses the (private) Cigui-Fachin Collection. The first floor is dedicated to the fine arts, while the permanent exhibition on the second floor features historical tomb inscriptions and the coats of arms of famous families from Umag.
The museum is directed by Narcisa Bolšec Ferri, under whose leadership the museum has made a name for itself.

Better to get up early so it’s not so hot when you go shopping.

The beaches in Umag and the surrounding area are generally concrete-paved areas (Katoro, Punta), pebble beaches (Djuba, Stella Maris, Savudrija, Crveni Vrh), or sandy beaches (Rita City Beach, Zambratija, Stella Maris/Monterol).

It is the oldest (still-standing) lighthouse on the Adriatic and just 9 km from Umag. It’s a stone’s throw away by bike. The commemorative plaque at the base of the lighthouse omits the name of Emperor Franz I, who had assumed patronage of this building at the time.
And presumably not without good reason, as the tower was of strategic interest to the people of Trieste: From Opicina, above Trieste, the lighthouse is visible, allowing them to signal incoming ships via visual contact back then.
