Sunset in Novigrad
Although it is one of the most popular destinations on Istria’s west coast, Novigrad is not as crowded as one might expect.
The Mediterranean charm of the old town, situated on a headland, invites you to linger and unwind with a glass of wine while enjoying the view of the sea. In the old town, with its numerous restaurants, cafés, and bars, you’ll have more than enough opportunities to do just that.
With just under 4,500 residents and its compact layout, Novigrad has a human scale. The town is completely car-free. Everything is within easy walking distance, so you don’t have to spend your stroll through town rushing around (as can so easily happen in Rome).
Speaking of Rome: Novigrad is ancient. As early as 381, a Bishop Maximus from Civitas Nova is mentioned at the Synod of Aquileia (then known as the "Second Rome").
And that is essentially what Novigrad is still called today, in Latin, Italian, and Croatian - Cittanova.
