Incidentally, the history of Lido degli Scacchi is a unique one. Around 1500, the town was the scene of a fierce conflict between the Serenissima and the power-hungry Este family (of Ferrara). The battle on the banks of the Po ended in a crushing defeat for the Venetians and an overwhelming victory for the Ferrara militia.
After the victory was secured, an artilleryman from Polesine named Arveda, who had always been loyal to Alfonso I, was appointed Scior di Scacchi, or Knight of Scacchi (perhaps because he had organized his artillery so skillfully). And so he was granted a portion of the land where the first inhabited settlement of Lido degli Scacchi was established.
Fortunately, however, the old trees have been preserved. Today, the area features modern tourist facilities, restaurants, shops, sports and beach recreation areas, as well as a large open space for concerts.
From here, it's easy to take trips to the Po Delta Park and the Valli di Comacchio, whether by bike or on horseback. Those in the mood for culture can, for example, take a trip to Pomposa Abbey.
From the Strada Romea, which runs parallel to the coast, several shaded side streets lead to the sea, making it easy to reach your desired beach.
