The Calatrava Bridge, officially known as the Ponte della Costituzione, is worth mentioning because, although it is the newest and most modern bridge spanning the Grand Canal, it also took the longest to build.
The project quickly became a local political issue, as even at the opening, some pedestrians slipped on the modern, smooth materials and fell.
That is why locals mockingly call it the Ponte dei Caduti (Bridge of the Fallen). But it is beautiful, and practical - after all, it connects Piazzale Roma with the riverbank near Santa Lucia (train station), significantly shortening the route.
